Name That Plant! Week 2
Happy Monday, and hope everyone’s had their share of sangria in honor of Spain’s World Cup win. I got to pay a visit “upstate” this weekend — to the Bronx, where the New York Botanical Garden is located. (It might not that far, but if you’re coming from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where I live, it’s basically riding the entire 4 train’s length.) But it was well worth the trip: the daylily path was in full bloom, and I got to see the rock garden, and the edible culinary herb and vegetable gardens. I was there for a cooking demonstration as part of the Edible Garden program taking place all summer; visit any weekend and there will be a different chef/author/foodie cooking up something yummy from the garden. (I made a zucchini and scallion version of Fresh Veggie Korean Pancakes.)
In other news, with all the heat of the past couple weeks, things are growing on the roof at Sixpoint. Including this newcomer to the mid-summer, above. What is it?! It took me a few memory-checks to recall which pack of seeds this keg-container was planted with. Can anyone else guess what it is?
Hint: In this photo, the fruit is not yet mature.
Double hint: It would most commonly be called a “fruit” rather than a “vegetable.”
The first person who guesses this correctly in a comment in this post will win… a copy of Veggie Burgers Every Which Way by Lukas Volger, hot off the press! This is just a terrific book that should change any preconceived notion you have about “veggie burger” for good. It comes out this week, so keep an eye out for it in bookstores. Or, name that plant and it’ll be sent to your door (thanks to the author!).
